About Our Classroom

In Year R/1, we believe that learning should be exciting, meaningful and full of joy. Our classroom is a calm and welcoming space where every child can thrive.

We love to learn through play and exploration, encouraging children to follow their curiosity, ask questions and discover new ideas for themselves. We celebrate each child’s individual achievements and help them grow in confidence, independence and resilience.

Our class rules:

  • Be ready
  •  Be respectful
  • Be safe

Important information

Homework is given out on Friday and should be returned by Wednesday for marking. Spellings will also be sent home on Fridays to practise for the following week they’ll be in your child’s homework book.

Our PE day is Friday, so please make sure your child comes to school dressed in their PE kit!

We also encourage children to read daily at home learning and love of books. Every child will have many chances to read in school too, and this will be recorded in their Reading Diary.

Autumn Term

A Brilliant Start to the Year!

Year 1 have had an amazing start to the year! The children have returned from the summer holidays with such enthusiasm and a fantastic attitude towards learning.

We have been exploring our new English text Lost and Found. We even discovered a lost penguin in our classroom and the children have shown such kindness in helping him feel part of our class family!

In Maths we will be focusing on place value to 10. We will be exploring one more and one less, comparing numbers, and using number lines. We’ll be using lots of different maths manipulatives to help us understand place value in a hands-on way.

We will then move on to addition and subtraction, where we’ll learn to write number sentences, use part–whole models, explore number bonds to 10, investigate fact families, and practise adding and subtracting 1 or 2.

Towards the end of the term, we will explore 2D and 3D shapes, learning to name them and describe their properties.

Each day, we will also practise our counting skills, counting forwards and backwards, as well as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Our topic is All About Me and My Community. We will be learning about ourselves, our families, and the special people who help us at home and in school. We will also explore our wider community, discovering the different places and people who make it such a wonderful place to live.

In Science, we’ll be exploring the changing seasons and the natural world around us.

Religious Education

At St. Patrick's our day begins and ends with prayer and our mission to be like Jesus is at the forefront of everything we do. We celebrate R.E. in many different ways throughout the year.
