How we learn in FS2

Here you will find out a little bit more about how we learn in FS2. You will also be able to find more information about how you as parents and carers can help your child with their learning. At Saint Patrick's we really value creating a partnership with all of our parents and carers as you are your child's first educators and know them best.

Early Learning Goals – A Parents’ Guide
There are 17 Early Learning Goals in FS2 and 7 areas of learning, which are a bit like subjects.

In Early Years, we begin the foundation of teaching your child how to read and write. At Saint Patrick's we do this through daily phonics sessions using 'Little Wandle' Letters and Sounds Revised. In such sessions we teach your child both the pure sounds letters make, and the letter names. Please do not worry if you are not familiar with phonics, we will be carrying out both phonics and reading workshops for parents in the Autumn term when it is safe to do so.

Also in FS2 we teach the children to begin to write using cursive letters; by doing this it enables them to transition to learning how to join their letters when they move into Key Stage 1.
In FS2 we teach Mathematics practically to engage and excite the children; please see the leaflet below as to how you can teach different mathematical skills at home. When safe to do so, in the Autumn term, there will also be parent 'numicon' workshops so you can help your help your child with learning tasks that are sent home.
